PROJECT NAME: BRAVERN PHASE 1 AND PHASE 2

CONTRACTOR: SKANSKA USA (JR HAYES)

Although the project broke ground in the early summer of 2006, the conception date for MDCI occurred 10 years previous. The construction of a 91' deep soil nail wall within a 7 acre footprint was a challenge, but considering this excavation was 46' below the existing water table raised concerns which were difficult to argue. The answers to everyones questions came from the MDCI dewatering division. On May of 2006 MDCI mobilized a BG 36 drill to install 30 deep wells around the perimeter of the site to depths in excess of 130 in soils consisting of dense Glacial Till overlying Advance Outwash which was riddled with cobbles. Once the wells were functioning they would produce an average of 1500 gallons a minute 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Once the water was effectively drawn down, the wells maintained a steady flow rate of approximately 200 gpm. The effectiveness of the dewatering allowed MDCI to install a total of 147,000 square feet of shotcrete soil nail shoring. Given the excavation depths, the nails were long and the quantity abundant. MDCI installed a total of 4,443 soil nails many of which were at depths of 61' in length. In total, MCDI had 36 miles of soil nail drilling during Bravern shoring operations.
