Elwha River Bridge
Port Angeles, WA

Malcolm Drilling constructed four 3M diameter drilled shafts for the Elwha River Bridge near Port Angeles, WA utilizing a 3M Leffer oscillator and a Liebherr 883 dig crane. Support was provided by a Link Belt LS-218 service crane. The shafts were constructed to depths up to 82’ in river cobbles and boulders. These shafts all featured permanent slip-in casing in the upper portion of the shafts to facilitate the column concrete transition pours placed later by the General Contractor.

Additionally, MDCI utilized a Bauer BG-40 top-drive drill rig to construct 4’ diameter abutment shafts in rock and 6’ diameter shafts for the Pedestrian Bridge. Some of the 6’ shafts were advanced using a Leffer 2M oscillator and segmental casing in order to address caving and sloughing in the upper portion of the shafts.

In photo #2 the new bridge structure is nearing completion. Note Pedestrian Bridge that is suspended beneath the 2-lane traffic bridge.
