W2 Tower Foundation - Yerba Buena Island

Malcolm Drilling was selected to help construct the W2 tower foundation (composed of 4 large diameter shafts) located on Yerba Buena Island for the new Bay Bridge. The drill rig, a Casagrande C-60 weighing over 260,000 lbs was disassembled into 3 major sub-assembles and lowered into the new footing and reassembled. After completion of the drilling the removal was done in the reverse manner. The actual drilling took place in a newly blasted excavated footing that measured 60 ft by 80 ft.

Drilling consisted of 4 piles 2.5M diameter into 33 ft of 20,000 psi rock. Hartfuss and Bauer provided special drilling tools. Drilling took place 25 ft below water level.

Drilling operations proceeded 24 hours per day 7 days a week.
