On behalf of our entire field staff I wanted to take the time to express our sincerest appreciation for a job well done here at the Sutro Reservoir. The level of detail undertaken by your project management team and field crews was of the utmost importance on this project considering the various interior/exterior constraints.

AMOROSO CONSTRUCTION

Many people said it simply couldn’t be done. It was impossible to build a new football stadium without losing a single season of play. The project was just too complex to be completed in less than two years. Well, you have helped to prove the skeptics wrong, and have achieved the improbable. Thank you for your hard work, perseverance, dedication, professionalism, and commitment. Without the coordinated effort of everyone who worked on this project, it would not have been completed on time. I am both appreciative and grateful for the contributions of everyone on this team. You have performed impressively, and have accomplished what many said was impossible. Everyone involved should be proud of their achievement.

I want to personally thank Malcolm Drilling Co. for the exceptional job on our One Hawthorne project. We all understood the difficulties of this project from the beginning, but as the project moved forward we encountered a number of issues that accentuated an already challenging excavation. Malcolm Drilling Co. faced every issue with a proactive approach, offering solutions to mitigate cost and time lost. Working with this level of professionalism is a pleasure. This project should stand as an example of how a general contractor and its subcontractors can work together in all of our best interests and the interests of our client. It should also be noted that Malcolm Drilling Co. coordinated and worked with the excavation and dewatering subcontractors in a way not often seen. Webcor’s need to manage and/or mediate between the subcontractors during the shoring and excavation was minimal or nonexistent. This allowed us to be more efficient and proactive with the real problems of construction.

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

I worked with Kiewit on the new Benicia-Martinez Bridge in Northern California. Part of the project required that 99 large diameter drilled shaft foundations be constructed up to depths of 300 feet in the middle of the Carquinez Strait. During performance of the shaft work, unexpected caving soil conditions were encountered, making traditional open hole drilling methods impossible and jeopardizing the completion of the project. The Kiewit project team, Caltrans Engineers, and Drilling Experts from around the United States performed a joint value analysis to strategize a solution which would allow the project to be completed. The only feasible solution was to utilize the rotator method for shaft construction. The Kiewit project team brought in Malcolm Drilling to form a composite group of very highly trained and experienced professionals who developed a plan to construct the shafts with a temporary casing. That had never been done on bridge foundations of this depth in a marine environment in North America. The result was successful completion of 99 drilled shafts, and a substantial reduction in risk to the project. Thanks to the effort and ability of Kiewit and Malcolm, the new Benicia-Martinez Bridge opened to traffic on August 25, 2007. From my experience with them, I have every confidence that the Kiewit/Malcolm team possesses the experience, ingenuity and resources required to construct deep foundations in any environment.

Having worked directly with Malcolm Drilling on the Golden 1 Center project in downtown Sacramento, California, I would certainly recommend them for any complex, demanding and schedule-driven project. From their involvement on the engineering and testing program side, to production installation in the field, they were responsive, professional and did what was necessary to succeed. The company met and exceeded the demands of a very challenging schedule on a very high profile and complex project. Being one of the first subcontractors on site for construction of the Golden 1 Center, Malcolm Drilling set a high expectation for the subcontractors that followed them. They proved their ability to provide the necessary equipment, service and value to the project.
