Malcolm Drilling Awarded One of the Largest Foundation Contracts in San Francisco

Malcolm Drilling Company Inc. will soon be putting their foundation expertise to work on the billion plus Oceanwide Center complex located in the Transbay Area of San Francisco. Malcolm’s foundation work for this landmark project will require some of the most sophisticated deep foundation construction techniques ever employed in San Francisco. The foundation project includes: a 70-foot-deep excavation, cutter-soil-mixing shoring walls, dewatering, and drilled shafts over 300 feet deep founded in Franciscan bedrock. This contract is one of Malcolm’s largest foundation construction contracts to date and one of the largest of its kind in San Francisco.

This 2. 4 -million-square-foot development will have two mixed-use towers. The 625-foot-tall Mission Street Tower will hold a mix of hotel and residential space within its 54 stories. The 910-foot-tall First Street Tower will provide additional residential space as well as offices on a total of 61 floors and will be West Coast’s tallest residential project and San Francisco’s second-tallest building next to Salesforce Tower.

Super-sized office floor plans will offer flexibility for commercial tenants while the orthogonal structural system will provide the best in seismic stability. Malcolm is proud to provide foundation work in partnership with a project team headed by Tishman Construction as Owner’s CM and Swinerton/Webcor that includes architect Foster + Partners, architect Heller Manus, structural engineer Magnusson Klemencic Associates, and geotechnical engineer Langan.

The project broke ground in December 2016 and is estimated to be completed in 2021.
