Cathedral Hill Pedestrian Tunnel, San Francisco, California

Malcolm recently finished construction on a design-build pedestrian tunnel connecting the new Cathedral Hill Hospital and medical office building. The tunnel is 25-ft. below San Francisco’s Van Ness Avenue; one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares and a main North-South route connecting the city to the Golden Gate Bridge. The design required the installation of shoring piles and pre-cast road deck panels during a series of weekend road closures, allowing mining and tunnel construction to be performed on a regular work schedule beneath active traffic lanes. Malcolm’s Hayward office completed excavation of the tunnel and removed over 1,600 cubic yards of sand through a sidewalk opening. A custom ventilation system was developed for the project and maintained throughout construction of the cast-in-place tunnel. Detailed planning and efficient execution resulted in early completion of all closures, with streets re-opening ahead of schedule.
