IKEA, Renton, Washington
The existing IKEA store in Renton is currently under a full redevelopment and upgrade. The 15 acre site which IKEA has occupied was repurposed from pre-existing structures purchased from Boeing several years ago. The current project will see demolition of a parking garage to build a new 300,000 sf retail store while the directly adjacent IKEA store remains open. The building site sits upon soft alluvial deposits which require improvements in order to support the new building and mitigate seismic liquefaction. Malcolm’s design-build efforts included over 3,750 each 3 feet in diameter stone columns to an average depth of 25 feet. Two equipment units will work double shift in order to complete this work within a 10 week timeframe. The ground improvement work is expected to be complete before the end of this holiday season.
