Malcolm is currently working on installing micropiles to temporarily underpin an existing retail building in San Francisco. The underpinning is required support the building during removal of exterior walls and construction of a new central core. The micropiles are being installed using specialized drilling equipment capable of operating in the limited headroom conditions. Sectional drill pipe, or casing, is advanced to the target depth at each micropile location, then cementitious grout along with a high-strength steel tendon is inserted into each pile. Once the grout has fully cured, a percentage of the micropiles are load-tested to verify capacity prior to installation of the superstructure of the underpinning system.
