Malcolm’s Design-Build for the Sutter Health Van Ness Campus Hospital

Malcolm Drilling was contracted to design and construct the temporary support of excavation for the basement of the new hospital at the Sutter Health Van Ness Campus in San Francisco. The project involved implementing a design-build system for the OSHPD structure, with over 62,000 square feet of exposed shoring. The solution integrated soil mixing for the soldier piles and infill soil-mix columns to hold back running sands, allowing lagging placement. Over 600 tie-backs were installed, including a resourceful approach to installing some through an existing basement wall to incorporate the wall into the temporary support of excavation system, showcasing innovative engineering and construction techniques.

This project presented considerable complexities, particularly in the sequencing of all the specialized installation methods and activities in very restricted access areas.
