EAT-13 Data Center
Malcolm selected stone columns as ground improvement for the foundation of the EAT-13 Data Center project for Microsoft. The work was performed as a design-build contract, to support site development across variable subsurface conditions. A total of 1,691 stone columns were installed, each nominally 30 inches in diameter and extending to depths of approximately 20 feet.
All stone columns were installed using vibratory displacement methods, supplemented with water jetting and pre-drilling to address challenging dry, rocky soils. These conditions led to early difficulties with premature refusal and required refinement of installation techniques to achieve the target depths and geometry. Soil modulus testing, along with pre- and post-construction Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) were performed as internal quality control. We also installed several drilled shafts for the foundation of the generator.
